X/Twitter - detailed instructions

Setting Up X (Twitter) for Memorialization

  • Understanding X’s Policies:
    • X does not offer a legacy contact feature, nor does it provide a memorialization option.
    • Family members or authorized individuals can request the deactivation and removal of a deceased person’s account.

Requesting Account Deactivation on X (Twitter)

  • Submit a Deactivation Request:
    • To request the deactivation of a deceased person’s account, a family member or authorized individual must fill out the Deceased User Account Request Form on X's Help Center.
  • Information Required:
    • The requester will need to provide the following:
      • The deceased person’s full name and X username (handle).
      • A copy of the requester’s ID.
      • A copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Process Confirmation:
    • Once the request is submitted with the necessary documentation, X’s support team will review it and, if approved, proceed with the account deactivation.

Additional Considerations

  • No Memorialization or Legacy Contact:
    • X does not offer an option to memorialize accounts, meaning the account will be permanently deleted upon deactivation.
  • Privacy and Content:
    • Once the account is deactivated, all tweets, followers, and associated content are removed from the platform, ensuring the privacy of the deceased.
  • No Access to Account Content:
    • Unlike some other platforms, X does not allow family members or authorized individuals to access the deceased’s account content (such as tweets or direct messages) before deactivation.
