Witnessing your Will

Before you sign your Will, please read the guidance below carefully. We recommend printing it out so you can keep it handy when you and your witnesses are ready to sign.

Before You Start

Choose two adult witnesses who:

  • Are not named in your Will (they must not receive anything from it).
  • Are not married to or in a civil partnership with anyone named in your Will.
  • Are mentally capable of understanding what they’re witnessing.

Signing Your Will

Get your two witnesses together in the same room as you. Everyone must be able to see each other sign.

Tell them clearly: “This is my Last Will and Testament” then:

  • Initial the bottom of each page.
  • Sign the last page using your normal signature.

What Your Witnesses Need to Do

While still with you, each witness must:

  • Initial each page of the Will (next to where you initialled).
  • Sign the final page and complete their name, address, and occupation.

Script to Share with your Witnesses

Thank you for agreeing to witness my Will. Before I sign it, there are a few important things I need to make clear.

By witnessing my Will, you are confirming that:

  • I’ve read the Will and I’m happy with what it says.
  • I understand that this Will replaces any previous Will I’ve made.
  • I am of sound mind and understand what I’m doing.
  • I’m making this Will voluntarily, without any pressure from anyone.

Your role is important. If there are ever any questions or challenges about my Will in the future, you may be asked to confirm what you saw.
