Setting Up WeChat for Memorialization

  • Understanding WeChat's Policies:
    • WeChat does not offer a legacy contact feature or an official memorialization option.
    • Family members or authorized individuals can request the account to be deactivated after a user's death.

Requesting Account Deactivation on WeChat

  • Contact WeChat Support:
    • To request the deactivation of a deceased person’s WeChat account, a family member or authorized individual must contact WeChat’s customer service.
    • This can be done by sending an email to WeChat’s support team or by using the in-app support feature.
  • Information Required:
    • The requester will need to provide the following:
      • The deceased person’s WeChat ID or associated phone number.
      • Proof of death, such as a death certificate.
      • Proof of the requester’s relationship to the deceased, such as a family relationship certificate, or legal documents (e.g., power of attorney, executor of estate documentation).
  • Process Confirmation:
    • Once the necessary documents and information are submitted, WeChat’s team will review the request and proceed with the account deactivation if approved.

Additional Considerations

  • No Memorialization or Legacy Contact:
    • WeChat does not offer a memorialization feature, so the account will be permanently deactivated and inaccessible once the process is completed.
  • Privacy and Content:
    • Upon deactivation, all chats, contacts, and shared content on the account are permanently removed, ensuring the privacy of the deceased.
  • No Access to Account Content:
    • WeChat does not permit family members or authorized individuals to access the deceased person’s account content (e.g., messages, photos) before deactivation.
